ORGANIZATIONAL AND INSTITUTIONAL POWER

Organizational power is when large institutions or organizations have power over a large group of people. This type of power is usually total power over the people. An example of this is a prison system like the Shawshank prison system. The prison guards and wardens have total power over the prisoners in their care. This type of power can be used for either good or bad. A good use of organizational power would be a prison that sincerely believes in rehabilitation for their prisoners. An example of the misuse of organizational power would be a prison system like that in, The Shawshank Redemption. The Shawshank prison was riddled with corruption and so whilst the public heard of the rehabilitation that was going on, in actual fact there was no rehabilitation just slave labor that reaped rewards for those at the helm of the prison. Due to the large amounts of corruption, and the power that was held by Warden Norton, prisoners were treated unjustly under his supervision. As an example Andy was given one month in solitary confinement and then another month after that to "think about it". Another example is Billy's death. Billy had information that could get Andy out of prison and because Billy was willing to give his testimony in front of the court, Norton had him killed.
