![]() PERSONAL POWER
![]() Personal power is the power an individual has over another person or over a group of people. This type of power can be exerted in a subtle manner or one that is very obvious to the victim. In Shakespeare's Othello, Iago has personal power and exerts this over Othello, Cassio and Roderigo in a way that was not obvious, at the time, to the victims. He also had power over his wife, Emilia, but he applied this power in a less subtle way. Iago abused his personal power by misusing the trust that others placed in him. It was the fact that others trusted Iago, as an 'honest person', that allowed him to have so much power. The oppression that Iago caused Desdemona, Othello, Emilia and Roderigo led to great destruction and eventually the death of these four characters.
