IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER
In 1974 a pub in Guildford, England, was bombed by the IRA killing five people. The English are furious with the IRA and demand the bomber(s) to be brought to justice. Gerry Conlon and Paul Hill are kicked out of Ireland by the IRA for petty crimes of theft so they leave for London. They meet up with some friends but arguments break out and they are turned onto the street where they spend the night in a park with a homeless man. This happened to be the night of the Guildford bombing.
The man who objected to Gerry and Paul staying with them told the police that Gerry was an Irish trouble maker. This was the opportunity the police were looking for and took them into custody under the suspected terrorist act, which stated that suspected terrorists could be held for seven days. Gerry, Paul and two others, now known as the Guildford four, along with the majority of Gerry's family, were trailed and found guilty, much to the delight of the English public. There was 'insufficient' evidence, the conviction was based upon falsified testimonies and manipulated facts. The Guildford four were all given life sentences and Gerry's family were charged with working in the IRA support network. They were given various sentences but Giuseppe, Gerry's father, was given fourteen years.
After sometime in prison, the true bomber confessed to the bombing, however police were quick to cover up this confession to avoid humiliation. An up and coming young lawyer by the name of Gareth Peirce devotes her time and energy towards proving that the police have been covering up the truth and endeavors to clear the name of all who were involved in this case. Gerry was cynical and had no faith in the English justice system, however due to his father's deteriorating health, Gerry is willing to try anything to clear his father's name and get his father some decent health care. Unfortunately however, Giuseppe loses his fight for life whilst still in prison. This makes Gerry even more determined to clear his father's name and in the end with the help of Gareth, succeeds in clearing the names of all who were convicted in the case of the Guildford bombing.

"In the name of Truth, in the name of Justice, in the name of Love...
In the Name of the Father."
